Using NLP in Your Business Model

nlp2 Using NLP in Your Business Model
Joaquin Costa asked:

Why would you use NLP in business? What can you expect would be the direct effect of NLP training for your company?

Have your company complete an NLP training and you will really pull everybody in your team or department together and make the company tighter. Whether you always felt that you have a good group of people or not, the results will speak for themselves when they are working well together as a team. Before the training, people are often not congruent with each other but the NLP training will pull everybody together even more and help them to become very supportive.

The training will give people the realization that they are in charge of their lives, that basically, they are capable of achieving whatever they want to achieve as an individual and as a team. The NLP tools that the company will get during an NLP training are the tools that will enable them to create long term positive and effective change in the workplace. With the tools in hand the future of your team and company encompass people that are focused, have drive and are highly motivated.

It is well known that if your company operates under the philosophy of happy employees, it will lead to happy people on the job as well as happy people with what is going on in their personal life. This will make for a more productive work environment. If you’ve got an employee that is constantly concerned about their personal life, or their work performance it is taking away some of their mental energies and their productive time on the job. It also robs them of their peace of mind so that it depletes their creative skills.

The NLP training program will help your team focus more on what they want to achieve within the job and within their personal lives, and will give them skills to start off on the path of achieving that level of success.

Training is one of those expenditures that is hard to track to see exactly what benefits you’re getting. Sometimes, measuring that is very difficult in pure dollars and cents, however you really can see the change in the attitude of the people, seeing how they work together more easily and more comfortable with each other. The end effect is that they are more productive whilst smiling more. If you would like to watch them leaving at the end of the day of hard work in good spirits, in a good frame of mind, instead of crawling out the door frustrated, especially with their work, NLP is for you and your team. These changes will definitely affect the bottom line.

So to spend money on training, you need to realize the importance of providing NLP training in areas such as creativity, communication skills, team dynamics and achieving goals in addition to the standard technical areas. NLP is most definitely one of the best holistic trainings that will benefit employees. Suffice to say that applying these techniques into your work force will assist in having one of the most well rounded teams around.

Hypnosis Explained

hypnosis3 Hypnosis Explained
Adrian Saunders asked:

Hypnosis explained – today you are going to get answers to some of the most frequently asked questions in the world of hypnosis. These include what hypnosis really is, what the most powerful forms of it are, how difficult it is to learn, whether anybody can be hypnotized, and whether it is worth getting yourself a good hypnosis course to show you the techniques you need to learn. You will find everything you ever wanted to ask about hypnosis but were too afraid to do so in this article.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is the act of using various techniques, be they conversational or body language related, to control the mind of another person, referred to as the subject.

What is the most powerful form of hypnosis?

By far the most powerful form is that of conversational hypnosis. This is the art of using various phrases, words and prompts to force people to believe what you say, do what you tell them to do or act as you wish for them to act, through everyday conversation. This form of hypnotism is virtually undetectable, as your subjects will simply feel that you are having a normal conversation with them.

How difficult is it to learn?

The basic techniques of hypnosis, especially conversational hypnosis, are not particularly difficult to learn and master. Of course, like all other skills and abilities, it does take time, and the more advanced aspects are far more difficult to learn. However, there are a number of courses available on the Internet that will show you what you need to be shown in order to learn these techniques and principles in the easiest, fastest manner possible.

Can anybody be hypnotized?

Yes, virtually anybody who isn’t themselves a master of hypnosis can be hypnotized using basic techniques and principles. It really is that powerful and simple, despite what some people may believe or have been told.

NLP Programming

nlp1 NLP Programming
A. J James asked:

What Is NLP

NLP stands for neuro linguistic programming and it was designed in the 1970′s to allow people to model themselves on the successful actions of others. The concept is based around the notion that by mimicking the skills and communication aptitude of “high flyers”, an ordinary person could in theory replicate many of their successes.

NLP Applied

There are opponents to NLP, just as there are those who swear by the system’s methods and techniques. Anybody, theoretically could be successful if they had better communicative disciplines, especially in the area of one on one social contact. The effective characteristics of business leaders and many wealthy an of d high achieving members of society are based around their social skill, usually of extremely high aptitude.

Opponents argue that good communication is not they single key to accomplishment, however it might also be argued that very few high achievers lack good social aptitude.

Applying the skills of social excellence has benefited many people and still more people on a daily basis become proponents of the NLP system.

Taking NLP To The Next Level

Like any area of success, neuro linguistic programming can be performed at higher levels of conscious deployment. Those who are studious in the art of building rapport can often become addicted to the power of persuading people that they are in fact the confident, happy, charismatic persona that they appear to be. If an arrogance creeps in the skills of NLP can weaken and plays of social contact can be disingenuous and can have an adverse affect, not that this is prone to happen.

The Psychology Of Excellence

To become excellent one must either inherently possess talents above and beyond that of their peers or seek and develop skills to a level that exceeds the apparent skills of others. Many people use NLP to accelerate their personal endeavors for achievement. In fact it levels the playing field up significantly.

Beating Sub Par

With an outright epiphany or a moment of sobriety some people can not make the changes they need to step up an extra rung in life. These people often need a push before the even look for an effective tool to help bolster their own mediocrity. Many motivational speakers, life coaches and success trainers take the message to the masses so to speak. They spread the idea that you can change by be conscious that change itself is a possibility and that NLP is and effective means to which change can be built with.

Health Norwich – Could Hypnosis Be Better For Your Health?

Are you battling with your health? Norwich has many hypnotherapists who could just make the difference for you.

Are you tired of hurting, feeling pain, battling with mental or physical health issues? If so, you may be an excellent candidate for hypnosis.

For example, when we sleep, the body will begin to rejuvenate and heal itself during the deep stages. This is why when a person has insomnia, not being able to reach the deep stage of sleep; his or her body is tired the next day, which then manifests as headaches, joint pain, depression, irritability, and so on.

The benefit of hypnosis is multi-layered in that it can help you sleep better, thus allowing the body to work through health problems.

One of the keys in striving for better health is listening to your body while it is going through this healing process. With hypnosis, you will learn how to listen to suggestions while your body is in a deep relaxed state, providing an optimum environment for the immune system to work more efficiently.

Through positive suggestion and healing imagery, you have the advantage of taking a break from the stress caused by illness. The result is that you feel better, are not as tired, and certain illnesses improve.

Look at migraines, which for most people, can be debilitating. Sadly, millions of people suffer from migraine headaches at one level or another. Rather than pump the body full of chemicals in hopes of getting relief, you can use hypnosis.

With this, you would close your eyes and listen to suggestions immediately at the onset of a migraine. During this type of hypnotic session, you reach a powerful level of relaxation, which in turn lowers the blood pressure.

Since migraines are caused by blood vessels being constricted, when blood pressure is lowered, it is not trying to rush through small vessels. Best of all, hypnosis is an all-natural approach, easy to use and highly effective.

Just as with migraines, hypnosis is very beneficial for tension headaches. Although hypnosis can help in many ways, there are three specific reasons it works for this particular type of headache. First, hypnosis takes you into a deep state of relaxation, which again, helps to lower blood pressure and reduce pain. Second, stress hormones also begin to drop with hypnosis. Third, you will discover that levels of concentration and memory are greatly improved. Just imagine no more tension headaches simply with the use of hypnosis!

Hypnosis can also be helpful for a condition known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In the past 10 years, tremendous research has been done on IBS, a condition in which people suffer from constipation and/or diarrhea, along with abdominal problems. Obviously, IBS can be disruptive to live, making work or school difficult. Now imagine that you work with a qualified and licensed hypnotherapist who can routinely provide you with positive suggestions to get relief from IBS. In truth, people who have gone this route for IBS have experienced up to 80% improvement.

These examples are just a very small sample of what can be done with hypnosis. Smoking Cessation, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Sleep Disorders, Self Esteem are just a few more conditions. The key is to work with a qualified hypnotherapist who understands the disciplines and principles associated with hypnosis. However, self-hypnosis can also be beneficial but it takes time to learn how to perform it properly. Even so, with the positive suggestions of hypnosis, you can overcome many health issues, leaving you with a long, fulfilled life, with much improved health.

Hypnotherapy

hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy
Michael Colucci asked:

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to treat patients who are in pain or who are having problems within their minds. Those who use hypnotherapy believe that patients who enter a trance are much more likely to listen to suggestions which are given to them. Some conditions which are treated by hypnotherapy are pain, stress, obesity, stress, and amnesia. While many of these conditions are related to the mind, some functional ailments can be treated as well. Hypnotherapy is a practice that was used by the Ancient Egyptians and Indians. In these societies the practice would often have a religious tone, and both music and dance was included in the practice.

It wasn’t until the 19th century that a number of healers begin developing the methods that would come to be known as hypnosis. Franz Anton Mesmer developed a theory which has come to be known as animal magnetism. He did extensive research on hysteria, and his studies indicated that advanced cases were similar to what is called a post-traumatic stress disorder. The work of Sigmund Freud also played an important role in the development of hypnotherapy. There are a number of criticisms which have been made against the practice.

Some believe that the connection between the patient and the therapist may cause problems. The patient may want to please the therapist, or they may worry that the therapist doesn’t like them. However, many of these claims are inconsistent because hypnotherapy will generally take place in a medical facility. There are a number of common techniques that are used in this practice. One of the primary techniques is age regression. The hypnotist will attempt to mentally return the patient to a previous state, and this will often be done to help the patient gain something that they have lost.

The second technique that is commonly used in hypnotherapy is called revivification. In this technique, the hypnotist will help the patient remember previous experiences they’ve had. As an example, the hypnotist may ask a patient if they have ever been fishing, and if they have been, they will begin recalling the time that they went fishing, and there will be no need for the hynotist to create a new state. Another common method that is used in hypnotherapy is called a guided imagery. With this technique, the hypnotist will guide the patient through a pleasant experience. The hypnotist may often repeat certain ideas or concepts in order to get the patient to accept them, and this is called repetition.

In general, people are more relaxed when they are in a dream state. When a person is able to visualize something they desire, research has shown that it is much more likely that they will obtain it. In this situation, the goal of the hypnotist is to help the patient achieve a desired goal. The word Hypnotherapy is based off the word “Hypnos,” and this was the name of the Greek god of sleep. This technique has primarily been used to help people on a mental level, and was not well understood until the 19th century.

NLP and Nested Loop Structures For Public Speaking

nlp3 NLP and Nested Loop Structures For Public Speaking
Stuart Tan asked:

So you’re crafting your speech, and you have a few points, but you’re completely unable to remember it or structure it well enough to make it impactful while having a solid message. The reason: you are doing it wrongly. As a person writing a speech, you shouldn’t be paying attention to words and sentences at all. Instead, you ought to be focusing on the emotions you want to generate.

If you know anything about anchoring or conditioned responses, emotions can get connected to each other by presenting them sequentially. So, if you think of your start state (usually also known as a problem state) you already have an introduction. Now, think of your end state, and you build a conclusion, which should also be a solution state.

Between these two states, you structure a series of intermediary states to build other emotions within them. Now, the tricky part. Nested loops are meant to create the same effect in hypnosis as fractionation – interrupting the state by causing the person to go in and out of trance until they go much deeper into trance. Nested loops do this through the use of story structures. Basically, if you don’t complete your story, you cause an open loop. Ideally, before you close the loop, you embed ideas and suggestion within the story that create a meaningful close to the story that goes into the unconscious; people seldom remember things that are completed.

A typical nested loop structure starts this way: open story A – story b – story c – story d – close story d, story c, story b, story a. Just prior to closing each loop, you insert an embedded command that will be useful and can serve the individual.

The biggest issue with the use of nested loops the elegance. Few people can use even this simple structure without being clumsy and awkward in their story telling. You’re not meant to use this as a formula – you really need to know how to effectively utilize nested loops that flow. There are a very wide variety of nested loop patterns and structures that are appropriate for different kinds of people, which is something you can learn at an advanced (master) practitioner training from me.

NLP Anchoring and the Law of Attraction

nlp NLP Anchoring and the Law of Attraction
Jacob McDonald asked:

What is the law of attraction and how can it be affected with NLP?

The Law of Attraction is the universal law that the focus of your thoughts becomes the reality that you are living. What you focus on is attracted to you. As one of the spokesman for the law attraction Mike Dooley states “Thoughts Become Things”. The principles of the law of attraction have been used in people’s lives all over the world to bring success, relationships, personal wealth, and white jaguars. The law of attraction, when used in a person’s life, literally makes dreams come true.

How can you begin to use the law of attraction in your own life? The law of attraction is easy to apply to your life and some might say that is seems to be too simple to work. Many people do not know that they are actively taking part in the law of attraction on a daily and moment to moment basis in their lives already. To begin to use the law of attraction you may use the following steps.

1. Clearly in your mind think of what it is that you want to attract into your life be it a new home, a car, a specific relationship or personal wealth.

2. State to yourself that you have the thing that you are attracting now.

3. Next, take 5 – 10 minutes each day and visualize yourself with the attracted thing, or event as if it were happening now. Feel the feelings and see the things that are congruent to having your dream now.

4. Continue this exercise once a day and allow your unconscious mind and the universe to align their selves with your will.

To clarify some of this process I will explain some of the steps in greater detail. When you are deciding what you are going to manifest into your life be very specific. Make sure when you are stating what you are attracting to yourself that you state it in the positive. If you have bills racking up do not focus on not having bills, focus and state that you have abundance and in this case be specific about how much abundance you are looking for.

When you visualize your wish happening in the present, make it so vivid to yourself that you can feel the excitement and gratitude of having this thing now. Make a note to include yourself in your visualization. If you are in want of a new car, see yourself in the car; see your hands on the steering wheel of this car. It is important to see yourself in the vision so that your unconscious mind and the universe understand you are not merely attracting seeing this new vehicle, but that you are indeed driving and have ownership of this new amazing dream. Your unconscious mind does not know the difference between what is visualized and what is actually seen. The results of this are that your unconscious mind will begin to make adjustments in yourself to make your focus your reality.

Be encouraged as you progress with this process that as you remain focused on your goal, it will come about. Continue to visualize everyday even though it may appear the results are not happening as quickly as you would like.

NLP can accelerate the law of attraction

To Reiterate; the key points of the law of attraction are to feel the intensity of the feelings that accompany you having your dream and secondly to vividly visualize your dream as a current reality.

For the first and most important aspect of the law of attraction, which is to feel the emotions and feelings of this new reality coming to pass, a powerful NLP, Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique can be used called anchoring. Anchoring in short, is attaching a neurological response to an external stimulation. An example of this is when you are in love with someone and you see their number form onto your caller you may notice your heart begin to race before you even answer the phone. Another example of an anchor that is used powerfully in marketing is through the use of music. You may feel a certain emotion when listening to specific songs. In recent car commercials I have seen the use of a variety of popular songs from the 70′s. These songs are used knowing that the target audience has an emotional response to them. The principle behind this is to attach the summer fun you felt in the 70′s to the fun you can feel in this new vehicle.

Now that you have an understanding of an anchor as an external stimulation that triggers an internal state I will explain how this can be used to enhance the process of actively attracting things and events into your life. Anchoring can be effectively used to trigger the states of excitement and joy as you want to apply to your dream and its fulfillment. In the event of your visualization you will now be able to trigger the powerful emotions that are the driving force of creating reality.

How do you go about making an anchor? There are many ways to make an anchor; I will layout several strategies to follow and you can choose the one that best works for you. First off what you are looking for in a reality creating state is: gratitude, joy, excitement and ecstasy. These are a great place to start to show your unconscious mind and the universe that this is something that you really want.

One method you can use to gain immediate access to these states is through music.

1. Find a piece of music that you particularly like, a piece of music you have access to every day is obviously preferred.

2. Now that you have your piece of music ready to play, put it on repeat if possible and begin to play the music.

3. As the music is playing what you are going to do is begin to allow yourself to experience some powerful memories.

You will think of a time when you felt gratitude for any reason. See yourself in that very moment, seeing what you saw and feeling what you felt. Make sure that you relive these memories in the clearest way you possibly can. At the moment you feel the feeling intensely immediately shift your attention to the next memory you will be using. Now find memories for each of the feelings you will be anchoring including: joy, excitement, and ecstasy

4. When you have relived several memories and felt the multiple feelings you are looking for you can turn off the music.

5. Now that the music is off, you need to forget about the whole experience and think of something else, such as what your address is, what your mother’s maiden name is, and what the model of your first car was.

6. Now it is time to test the anchor. To test an anchor it is very simple, all you need to do is introduce the stimulation again. In this case turn your song on again, and notice that you can feel the feelings of Gratitude, joy ect…

7. If you do not feel the feelings as intensely as you would like replay the song again as many times as you wish and attach as many powerful memories as you want. You may find yourself having a whole lot of fun doing this because you will start to remember things you haven’t thought of in a long time, think of the things that bring a smile to your face and a warmth in your heart.

Another method to anchor emotional states is by physical touch. This is my personal favorite when working with another person because it is more intimate and I feel more of a connection between us as we are working together to overcome specific problems or bringing out desired emotional states. This method is also powerful when doing this work on your own.

1. First you are going to choose a place on your body that you will touch with a light to medium pressure. (Note: I would recommend an area on your knee for this technique. A key point to take into consideration is to touch the same place with each emotion and to apply the same pressure each time. Many people ask if it has to be exactly the same place with exactly the same pressure. In response to this, be as close with both location and pressure as you possibly can. Do this technique to the best of your ability and you will see beautiful results.)

2. Allow yourself to experience some powerful memories. Just as stated in the third point to the auditory anchor you will clearly remember a time for each emotional state.

3. When you feel the emotion begin to build get ready to touch the area you have chosen, but be aware of your timing. Touch the area at the moment the emotion is the strongest. You will notice you can feel the emotions more intensely by increasing the details of the memory you are replaying. Hold the pressure at that area for a brief moment, 1 – 2 seconds will be perfect.

4. After you have anchored one state follow this up with thinking of some information like what did you have for breakfast, or how much did you save on your car insurance?

5. Now repeat the process for each emotional state that you are anchoring.

6. When you have anchored all of the states clear your mind and think of something like; when was the last time you went out to dinner?

7. Now test the anchor by touching yourself in the same place with the same pressure. You will feel the emotions flood in, and you may experience some of the memories after firing the anchor off.

There is a way to create an anchor using an image of any sort. To do this follow the last procedure for creating a physical body anchor, but instead of touching yourself look at an image at the peak of the feeling. You can do this with an image on your computer, a poster, a figurine or a flash card that you have or that you will construct.

Now that you have this powerful anchor you may use it to accelerate the law of attraction in your life. To do this, follow the law of attraction process, and during your 5 – 10 minute visualization period you can create the emotional state needed to cause your unconscious mind and the universe to respond by firing off your anchor. You can take this a step farther and also fire off the anchor when you are thinking of this process working in your life. You will have a twofold effect of not only attracting your dreams into your life using strong positive feelings, but you can also increase the speed of this process by attracting the success of your use of the law of attraction by using the strong feelings on your thoughts of it working.

This anchoring technique is a very powerful way to access any desired emotional state. You can use this very technique to anchor any emotional state to a song, an image, or a touch. If there is a time when you think a specific emotional state would be desired you can use anchoring to do this.

Enjoy this amazing technology and watch your life transform into your wildest dreams!

Review of Underground Hypnosis

hypnosis1 Review of Underground Hypnosis
Lawrence Shanks asked:

Underground Hypnosis can be easy and fun for you, if you use the right methods. Underground Hypnosis has developed a huge following. Underground hypnosis or “Black ops” was developed by people that wanted to expand and polish their persuasion skills and bring them to another level. Underground Hypnosis is like digging for gold and you get plenty of it but the reality is that anyone with a really basic knowledge of communication can hypnotize anyone in minutes. Underground hypnosis teaches you to easily hypnotize people though conversation, hypnotize people through an email messages, bend people to your wishes in any circumstance and boost your confidence to a supreme level and all in an instant. Underground hypnosis is the program for those who want to gain power over themselves or anybody else. Underground Hypnosis has been called ‘the best online resource for learning the underground secrets of hypnosis, easy to understand, and guaranteed to get quick results if you use these techniques. These techniques were not available to the public until a man named Taylor Starr unearthed them. If you ever wanted to learn hypnosis, then you are about to discover that this may be the ideal platform for you to do so. For those that are looking for external hypnosis techniques, I would suggest that you check out Underground Hypnosis as it is a combination of insanely effective powers.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis can be a useful way of changing your self image. Hypnosis, in general, is a psychological situation wherein an individual shows signs of changes in their behaviour, thought, or attitude. Hypnosis continues to be a contentious issue in many peoples book. Hypnosis is a powerful weight loss tool. It’s not even as complicated as ‘regular hypnosis’. The power of suggestion is real, and one way to use it is with hypnosis tapes, CD’s or downloads.

Power

In other words, it can help your brain power. With practice, this becomes easier, and your thinking becomes more powerful. This information is very powerful and can give you an unfair advantage. The interesting thing about the subconscious mind is that it is powerful. You know how powerful the human mind can be, now it’s time for you to take action and start using it to reach your full potential. One of my favourite sayings is “Power is not in getting other people to do what you want. Real power comes from getting yourself to do what you want.” If using hypnosis can achieve this for you, go for it!

Hypnotherapy and TFT – Powerful Therapy

hypnotherapy2 Hypnotherapy and TFT Powerful Therapy
Terry Doherty asked:

When it comes to a powerhouse of therapy, thought field therapy (TFT) combined with hypnotherapy is one of the most effective out there today. The mind is full of strength and power and when therapies combine to workout the struggles housed inside the mind, there is no stopping the positive outcome.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the practice of hypnosis in a therapeutic manner. A person who is hypnotized allows the inner most walls of the mind to fall for a short period of time. During these sessions, the hypnotherapist can guide the person through the various sections of the mind seeking out the causes for any struggles or troubles they may be having in life. While in a hypnotic state, unlike a waking state, the mind does not block outside forces from persuading these negative thoughts and ideas out of the subconscious. Once the causative factors are found and neutralized, the patient of hypnotherapy will have a better feeling about their life and the situation that brought them into the hypnotherapist’s office in the first place.

Hypnotherapy is practiced for a variety of reasons. Patients often choose hypnotherapy for phobias, fears, weight loss and anti-smoking. As of late, relationship counselling is also moving up the list of the most common hypnosis treated concerns with patients.

Thought Field Therapy

Created by Roger Callahan, TFT is the practice of the physical combined with the mental treatments of certain physical ailments. It is explained that TFT uses what are called meridian points throughout the body as the centres for Qi flow. When a patient thinks about the negative feelings harbour their lives, those feelings are brought to the surface of the body at corresponding meridian points. When tapped upon in a certain manner, the Qi flow is restored and the negative feelings are washed away in minutes.

TFT also utilizes voice technology (referred to as VT) in order to help stimulate the rise of the negative energy to the surface of the skin. Training to learn the practices of TFT are very specialized and are taught only be Callahan himself.

The Power of Combination Therapy

When TFT and hypnotherapy are combined, the results are nothing less than phenomenal. The hypnotherapy is a fantastic beginning point for patients that are unaware of the reasons they are having certain symptoms or negative feelings. Phobias are the perfect example of such a situation. With hypnotherapy, the cause of the fear can be found and then the patient will resort to TFT to restore their inner balance and eliminate the fear from their lives.

While there are some doctors who are trained in both hypnotherapy and TFT, the most realistic choice is to find separate doctors within each specialty that are willing to work together in your treatment. The combination of forces needs to be something that all parties agree to and thus TFT needs to be a method the hypnotherapist is willing to accept.

While these two therapies are unique, in that they represent a more alternative option for therapy, their popularity is growing by leaps and bounds. Hypnotherapy and TFT are both completely natural and safe for the human body. With no known side effects, the patients of hypnotherapy and TFT are often turning to these treatments for more common ailments before visiting their medical doctors. If there is any chance that they are able to be cured in a manner that is 100% natural, that is becoming the most chosen medical path. From smoking to weight loss, relationship relief to stress relief, the power of combination hypnotherapy and TFT is strong and beneficial.

Hypnosis is considered by most as an altered state of mind. Essentially, this is a misnomer. The brain goes through four main brain wave states multiple times per day. These are Beta (full awareness), Alpha (light relaxation), Theta (deep relaxation), and Delta (sleep). To day that there is a “altered state of mind” would assume that there is a normal state from which the mind deviates. (And, the lambda and gamma states are rarely discussed.)

Another misunderstanding is that the entire brain is at the same state (frequency) at the same time. The truth is that different sections of the brain (neural substrates) are at various frequencies simultaneously. Nevertheless, hypnosis is normally associated with the Alpha and Theta states for the purpose of suggestibility and pain management. Guided imagery and meditation also produce similar states and are often discussed as closely related to hypnosis.

Another common definition of hypnosis is that it is the state where the critical faculty of the conscious mind is suspended and selective thinking and suggestibility are enhanced. This implies that certain functions of brain’s frontal lobe is reduced, shut down, or idled allowing new input without or with reduced interference from existing brain maps. Hypnosis supports re-wiring (neuro-plasticity) the brain through triggering neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, and neuromodulators, such as oxytocin.

Several factors are involved in a hypnosis session. Normally, a relaxed physical and mental state is assumed to exist in a somnambulistic trance. This level of trance is achieved prior to most therapeutic interventions. Taming the overactive anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG), the brain’s switchboard, and increasing serotonin flow as a result of relaxation and specifically rhythmic breathing helps promote synchronous Alpha, allows the brain to begin rebalancing allowing various parts of the brain, which were previously energy starved, to return to enhanced functioning. Such relaxation also promotes parasympathetic autonomic function, which helps the immune system. This is also a major factor in the treatment of digestive disorders.

Performance enhancing hypnosis involves initially calming the ACG and increasing synchronous Alpha. As mentioned above, this alone tends to stimulate mental functioning. However, it is necessary to stimulate dopamine and glutamate production in order to stimulate the growth of new the creation of new memories (new neural networks).

Over the past several years hypnosis researchers have used suggestion to affect somatic ailments. Since World War II, there has been irrefutable evidence supporting the using hypnosis to cure skin disorders. Recent research has focused on accelerating wound healing. While they universally agree that more research is warranted, they agree that there is a lack of understanding why this occurs. The implications of other somatic treatments are unlimited.

Another recent heuristic endeavor involves the modification of genes through the use of hypnosis. Ernest Rossi, Ph.D., a long-term authority on Ericksonian hypnotherapy, has proposed a set of protocols which use hypnosis as part of the epigenetic process. This concept directly challenges the notion that our “nature” is fixed.

Hypnosis is typically used for behavior modification. It is not uncommon for members of the public to initially think of weight loss or smoking cessation. However, with the psychological community many use their hypnotic skills as an adjunct to psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, which “re-sculpts” the mind/brain by promoting new learning and reframing old memories. This is done through the activating dormant genes in the nucleus of the brain’s neurons and the promotion of new neural connections.

The relationship between hypnosis and the emerging fields of energy psychology/energy medicine and neurofeedback is intriguing. Regarding the new energy modalities, they have yet to be fully accepted by the medical and psychology establishments. There are some who believe that the understanding of pizioelectric energy manipulation and pain gate theory may give some answers, the results from these fields are still predominantly anecdotal with a smattering of case study documentation. While there is considerable confidence in their protocols being used for the treatment of PSTD in returning war veterans, still energy modalities are in their infancy of acceptability.

A small handful of writers are starting to postulate about the relationship between bioelectric energy flows and hypnosis. The hypothesis is that the mind can direct energy. However new this concept may be, this actually is an ancient assumption among the Tibetan (Vajrayana) Buddhists whose completion stage of their tantric practices center on such energy manipulation through mental volition. Therefore, this is clearly an area for further investigation. The implications for pain control and somatic healing are numerous.

Neurofeedback, a new stepchild of biopsychology (aka biofeedback) should also be intriguing to the hypnotherapy community. The thought that someone can consciously decide to affect energy flows in the brain is novel to hypnotists, but an assumption to neurofeedback technicians. In fact, there are numerous neurofeedback devices (albeit relatively clumsy at the moment) that claim to train a patient to manipulate energy or blood flow in the brain. Surprisingly, state management and guided imagery are the technician’s therapeutic tools. On the other hand, these are areas in which talented hypnotists thrive. Unfortunately, however, a vast majority of hypnotherpists and their talented psychologist and psychotherapist brethren are overly “brain phobic”. If only the talents of the neurofeedback technician and the hypnotherapist could merge, I’m sure that a new explosion in the healing sciences would occur.

Hypnotherapy, which is the use of hypnosis for medical or psychological healing, was partially usurped by the American Medical Association in 1958 and the American Psychological Association in 1959. The belief was that no one should practice hypnotherapy unless he or she possessed licenses in on of those two fields. Indeed, there are a multitude practitioners in the licensed professions. (Note: A majority of our Institute are licensed medical and mental health practitioners.) This belied the fact that there were a tremendous number of extremely proficient practitioners without these licenses. In fact, many of the trainers for licensees were non-licensed hypnotists. Currently such hypnotists are increasingly being recognized as staff hypnotherapists in hospitals, clinics, and prisons.

Unfortunately, in the media (especially in the entertainment realm) hypnosis has all the hype of magic and is believed to appeal only to the “cult of the weird”. Most medical practitioners who I meet are relatively clueless to the efficacy of hypnosis despite NIH’s efforts which have documented over 11,000 recent credible research studies supporting it. Psychologists, whose premier association, relegates hypnosis to a minor “department”, leave the impression that they have some type of patent on the concept. While I have studied with and under some phenomenal licensed psychologists who are some of the best hypnotists I know, still there are many of that ilk who wrongly believe that their minimal training (or less) make them qualified to pass judgment. And then there are the unlicensed professional hypnotherapists, some of which are the most talented in the field, who belong to a multitude of competing organizations that have yet to agree on standards. Regardless, of this proliferation of ownership claims and such, it is still clear that the centuries of experience with the hypnotic arts have much to contribute to the future of integrative healing.
